Our range of molton fabrics

Whether on stage, in the photo studio, in catering or in the event sector - molton fabrics are used in a wide variety of areas. Molton is used, for example, as a backdrop on stage or for platform cladding at trade fairs. This fabric is particularly popular in stage and theater technology. Thanks to its versatile properties, the fabric is used to design stage sets and often serves as a stage curtain. This so-called stage molton is also suitable for sound insulation due to its weight of up to 300 g/m². It also functions as a wrinkle-free fabric backdrop, as the heaviness of the fabric prevents wrinkles from forming.

What is molton?

Molton is a fabric made from 100% cotton. Its production varies depending on the area of application. Classic molton, for example, is produced using a tight body weave. This weaving technique produces a firm and robust fabric. Decorative molton, on the other hand, is produced using plain weave. This weaving technique ensures that the fabric is strong and air-permeable. Thanks to its roughened surface on both sides, molton can effectively absorb sound and light. The effectiveness of sound absorption depends on the weight per unit area of the molleton. This is given in grams per square meter (g/m²). The higher the grammage, the better the degree of absorption. On stage, this enables good acoustics and sound reproduction. Furthermore, the rough surface texture allows light to be absorbed. This is particularly important on stage and in photography to prevent unwanted reflections of light.

Classic molton usually has a density of 300 g/m² and thanks to its opaque properties, the stage can be shielded accordingly. Black molton is used particularly in the stage and theater sector. This is specially treated so that it is flame-retardant in accordance with DIN 4102 and can be assigned to the corresponding building material class (B1).

In addition to classic molton, there is also decorative molton, which is usually lighter with a density of 160 g/m² and is often used for decorative purposes. Our decorative molton is also flame-retardant in accordance with DIN 4102 and corresponds to flammability class B1.
